What’s the Difference Between a Dental Discount Plan and Dental Insurance?

August 29, 2019

Having healthy teeth is an essential part of your oral health, but unfortunately, many Americans don’t have dental insurance. The good news is, if you don’t have dental insurance, you still have options.

What is Dental Insurance?

Dental insurance is a type of health insurance that covers your dental healthcare costs. Usually, it works by collecting a monthly fee in exchange for free or reduced-cost dental care.

If you or your spouse’s employer offers dental insurance, it’s probably best for you to explore that as an option. Most dental insurance covers 100% of regular preventive care, which means, over the course of a year:

  • 2 dental cleanings
  • 1 set of dental x-rays
  • 2 dental exams

Coverage does vary greatly. Some have maximum spending limits or won’t cover certain procedures. It’s important that you do your research before you join a plan so you know what you’re signing up for.

What is a Dental Discount Plan?

Dental discount plans are offered by many dental offices. Most operate by offering discounted services at their offices in exchange for a flat annual fee.

Fees tend to be between $150 and $350. Most people who are in relatively good dental health save money by signing up for an in-house dental plan instead of paying for dental insurance. However, it is important to consider the level of care you need. If you need extensive dental work, a discount plan is probably not for you.
