A new year is upon us which means it is time to start planning your New Year’s Resolutions! Many of us commit to living healthier lives when the clock strikes midnight on December 31st, but how many of us include our teeth and gums in those health resolutions? At South Springs Dental Group, we are encouraging all of our patients to choose one way they can up their dental game in the new year. Struggling for ideas? Here are a few.
Start Drinking More Water
You’ve most likely heard it said before – drinking water will promote overall wellness. Did you know that includes your teeth? There is a condition called ‘Dry Mouth’, which is a breeding ground for cavity-causing bacteria. In addition, this condition can turn into gum disease. Drinking more water not only helps your body stay hydrated but also prevents Dry Mouth! You may think you are drinking enough already, but health experts encourage people to drink their weight in ounces every day for optimal health.
Two-By-Two
Good things come in twos – at least in the dental world. Brushing your teeth twice every day for two minutes each time and following with flossing and a good mouthwash is key to dental health. In the morning, you are brushing away all the yucky bacteria that have taken up rest in your mouth over the last 8 hours. At night, there are a lot of bacteria trying to call your teeth and gums home from the food we consumed throughout the day. Getting rid of this bacteria will help you avoid cavities and tooth decay. By flossing, you are removing the stubborn bacteria that brushing can’t reach alone.
Make Sure to Use Fluoride
No, this mineral is not just for children. We encourage everyone to use fluoride toothpaste and fluoride mouthwash. Fluoride is very successful at preventing bacteria from causing tooth decay and helps strengthen enamel. For a list of great products approved by the ADA, check out their ‘Seal of Acceptance’.
